This vacancy is being posted at both the Public Health Sanitarian 1 and Public Health Sanitarian 2 level. The level at which the position is filled will be based on the qualifications of the selected candidate
This position will be based out of the Minnesota Department of Health Duluth District Office
This professional position exists to administer and monitor the state program activities for the FPLS section in an assigned region. With the assistance from experienced staff and supervisor, the position manages a caseload of licensed establishments by monitoring compliance with applicable rule and statute, and communicating survey results to resolve compliance deviations as businesses to protect public health. The position conducts inspections, collects and analyzes data, and writes summary reports

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must meet all the minimum qualifications to be routed for consideration. This positon will be filled by one of three options listed below with some of the requirements assessed in the interview process. All applicants must possess the following:

  1. Public Health Sanitarian 1:

Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Sanitary Science, Sanitary Engineering or related environmental health field. Additional Requirements: Successful completion of at least 30 semester or 45 quarter baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate credits in the physical or biological sciences. Candidates must provide evidence of course completion prior to consideration for employment.
OR

  1. Public Health Sanitarian 2: Two years of experience conducting public health investigations related to food, beverage and lodging or public water supplies. (A Master's degree in one of the above areas will substitute for six months of experience)

Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Sanitary Science, Sanitary Engineering or related environmental health field. Additional Requirements: Successful completion of at least 30 semester or 45 quarter baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate credits in the physical or biological sciences. Candidates must provide evidence of course completion prior to consideration for employment.
OR

  1. Registration as a Sanitarian/Environmental Health Specialist.

AND
Additional requirements to be reviewed in the resume screening process and interview include:

  • English verbal and written communications skills for work such as concisely communicating with stakeholders and documenting information and observations.
  • Critical thinking skills for work such as analyzing information and making independent decisions based on evidence gathered.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to develop and maintain effective working relationships, inform operators of violations and participate in legal proceedings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of common business practices and of general requirements for sanitary conditions in public lodging places and establishments serving food and beverages.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of public health involved in the transmission of disease, water supply sanitation sewage treatment, laws and regulations governing sanitary conditions and practices, swimming pools, and of what constitutes legal evidence.
  • Experience conducting an educational program in environmental sanitation officials and maintaining effective working relationships
  • Experience gathering and interpreting data and information through research, personal contacts and observation into clear and concise reports and letters

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to navigate in the following environments: uneven terrain, slippery flooring, stairs and ladders, around operating equipment and in dimly lit, tight spaces.
  • Must be able to walk long distances and drive from location to location in all weather conditions.
  • Verbal and listening skills sufficient to interview employees in a variety of environments including: while loud equipment is operating, in busy kitchens and while the employees are working.
  • Ability to participate in training and meetings using video conference, conference calls and other types of remote communication.
  • Ability to use a laptop computer and cell phone in the field.
  • Lifting up to 40 pounds is required.

Additional Requirements
This position requires successful completion of the following:

  • Must successfully pass a background, motor vehicle report and reference check
  • Must possess a valid Class D driver's license
