• Master's degree from an accredited university in a relevant field
• Effective oral and written communication skills appropriate to the position
• College-level teaching experience (graduate TA experience acceptable) or professional experience in a relevant field
• Experience teaching in the structural engineering discipline including senior design capstone, steel design, wood design, or masonry design
• Effective teaching and pedagogy skills appropriate to the position
• Licensure as a professional engineer (P.E.) or commitment to obtaining licensure when eligible
• Evidence of the ability to work effectively with diverse groups
• Demonstrated experience with assessment
About the Job
The Department of Civil Engineering in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota Duluth seeks term Instructors (Job Code 9404) that may be part- or full-time to teach during the 2021-2022 academic year (8/23/21-5/22/22). Position responsibilities and expectations include teaching senior design capstone course and other courses in structural engineering.
Teaching (approximately 90%):
• Teach senior design capstone and other courses in structural engineering
• Demonstrate high command of their subject matter
• Have well organized course plans and deliver courses clearly to students
• Participate in curricular development
• Mentor students regarding specific coursework both inside and outside the classroom
• Support the University's goal of creating a positive and inclusive campus climate for all by advancing equity, diversity, and social justice
• Maintain a consistent and positive student teaching evaluation record
Service (approximately 10%):
• Participate in ongoing professional activities of one's discipline
• Advise undergraduate students
About the Department
The Civil Engineering Department is housed in a multi-million dollar building with state of the art classrooms and laboratories for each focus area. UMD is a midsized regional comprehensive public university of about 12,000 students located along the shores of Lake Superior. The Civil Engineering department was established in 2008 and is a part of the third largest college (the Swenson College of Science and Engineering) in the U of M system. The department has close connections with local industries and government agencies and its applied curricula has attracted a growing number of undergraduate and graduate students since its inception.
